St. Mary's School meets national register criteria A for housing the Catholic school in Chelsea, as well as social and cultural activities, from 1925 to 1960. In addition, the building meets criterion C as an intact Late Gothic Revival school building, the only example of the style in Chelsea. It is a locally notable example of the work of Detroit architect Arthur DesRosiers, known for his Catholic churches such as St. Hugo of the Hills located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Physical Description

St. Mary's School is an L-shaped, one-and-one-half-story, Late Gothic Revival school building situated on the southwest corner of Congdon and West Summit Streets in Chelsea, Michigan. The school is located on a tree-lined street in a quiet residential and commercial neighborhood with buildings of comparable age at the edge of downtown. It faces east and is fronted by a narrow lawn with minimal landscaping. Behind the school, a small parking lot and playground shield the view of an attached cinderblock garage. The building's red brick exterior is enhanced by limestone trim, a fieldstone foundation, and a shingled low-pitched roof. Two projecting entrances on the Congdon Street facade feature arched doorways, molded panels, large windows, and crenellated parapets. The building contains a large classroom at each corner and an attached auditorium. The interior of the building retains its original wooden doorways and trim and built-in chalkboards. Overall, the school requires some minor repairs but has had few permanent alterations since its construction and retains its historic and architectural integrity.
