National SignificanceArchitectureArtEducation1908-1941

Cranbrook is an educational and religious complex containing six autonomous institutions: a church, a primary and two secondary schools, an art academy, and a science institute. The buildings and the rolling three hundred-acre campus represent the fulfillment of a newspaperman's enthusiasm for art. George Booth valued artistic collaboration, hand craftsmanship, and functionalism. These views were thoroughly incorporated in the three major phases of construction at Cranbrook--the English Tudor phase represented by Cranbrook House (1908) designed by Albert Kahn; the Gothic phase represented by Christ Church Cranbrook (1926), designed by the Bertram Goodhue firm; and the Modernistic phase with Saarinen and Milles in residence represented notably by Cranbrook and Kingswood School and the Academy of Art's Museum and Library building.

Physical Description

Cranbrook is an educational and religious complex located on a three hundred-acre campus in Bloomfield Hills. It includes the Booth home, a church, a primary and two secondary schools, a science institute featuring a planetarium, and an accredited art academy granting both Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in architecture. All of the buildings except the planetarium (early 1950s) were commissioned by Detroit News publisher George Gough Booth who also endowed each of the six institutions. The campus includes excellent examples of early twentieth century architecture in a variety of styles including Tudor and Gothic revivals, and Modernistic. It also represents the artistic premises George Booth valued: artistic collaboration, hand craftsmanship, and functionalism.
