#1 Carl E. Schmidt House Wayne County, MI.
Built in 1904, the Carl E. Schmidt House is the former home of Carl Ernest Schmidt, a Detroit businessman who became a leading conservationist in the State of Michigan. He was instrumental in developing legislation adopted in 1909 that aimed at protecting and restoring millions of acres of former timberland and was also notable for his pioneering efforts in researching and promoting the best means for restoring the lands left barren by lumbering. He was known for his experimentation in farming cutover land in Iosco and Alcona counties. The Carl E. Schmidt House is one of the oldest surviving of the large year-round homes constructed along Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms during the late 1800s. It remains as one of the few lake front mansions that have retained part of the original grounds with a commanding view of Lake St. Clair.
The Carl E. Schmidt House is a two and one half story, L-shaped, brick and wood frame house located at the intersection of Lake Shore and Kerby Roads in the city of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. The design of the house displays a combination of the Arts and Craft and Tudor Revival styles reflecting the architectural styles prevalent in Grosse Pointe Farms at the time of its construction and later renovation. The Schmidt House is one of the last remaining large homes on Lake Shore Road dating from the first decade of the century that has retained part of the original grounds with a commanding view of Lake St. Clair.
