Meadow Brook Hall: Matilda Dodge Wilson's 88,000-Square-Foot Tudor and the Best Rooms to Photograph
Meadow Brook Hall stands at 350 Estate Drive in Rochester Hills, twenty-eight miles north of downtown Detroit, on the campus of Oakland University. The house covers 88,000 square feet across 110 rooms. Smith, Hinchman and Grylls finished it in 1929 for Matilda Dodge Wilson and her second husband Alfred at a cost of $4 million, which is about $56.6 million in 2024 dollars. It is the fourth-largest historic house museum in the United States and a National Historic Landmark since 2012.
Matilda inherited the Dodge automotive fortune when her first husband John F. Dodge died of the 1920 flu pandemic, and she married the lumber broker Alfred Wilson five years later. The couple bought a 1,443-acre farm near Rochester and spent a year in Europe touring English manor houses with the firm's chief designer, William Kapp. They settled on Compton Wynyates, the sixteenth-century Tudor pile in Warwickshire, as their model. Kapp obtained measured drawings from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Victoria and Albert Museum, returned to Detroit, and translated the Tudor vocabulary into a working twentieth-century country house with steam heat, electric service, and twenty-four bathrooms.
The architect, the same year, the other building
Smith, Hinchman and Grylls drew Meadow Brook the same year they finished the Guardian Building downtown. The firm ran a country-house practice in parallel with its commercial work, and the two projects shared craftsmen: Corrado Parducci, the sculptor responsible for the figures on the Guardian's Griswold entrance, modeled the plaster ceiling of the Meadow Brook dining room. The interior also includes Tiffany glass and Stickley furniture original to the house.

Knole Cottage and the Sunset Terrace
Matilda built a six-room playhouse called Knole Cottage in 1926 for her daughter Frances, scaled to a child's proportions. The Sunset Terrace, on the west elevation, faces the lawn that drops away toward the original Meadow Brook stream.
The house opened as a museum in 1971. Matilda left it to Oakland University in 1957, along with a substantial endowment. The art collection inside includes works by Van Dyck, Rosa Bonheur, Joshua Reynolds, Constable, and Gainsborough.
The best rooms to photograph
The Great Hall, with its hammer-beam ceiling and the Wilsons' coat of arms in the leaded glass, is the strongest interior portrait location in the house. The Library, paneled in English oak, holds afternoon light from the south windows. The Christopher Wren Dining Room — Parducci's plaster ceiling — is the strongest event location. Outdoors, the south facade in late-afternoon light, the Sunset Terrace at golden hour, and the Knole Cottage in soft morning light are the three frames to plan for.
